A fully-qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) will display a GREEN octagonalDriving Standards Agency badge in their windscreen after completing at least twelve to eighteen months of supervised training. ADIs have passed the DSA PART 3 exam testing their ability to instruct total beginners pre and post the DSA practical driving test. ADIs are also qualified to teach experienced drivers advanced driving techniques.
Approved Driving Instructors require a very high standard of driving ability and sound subject knowledge relating to teaching others to drive. They must have the ability to transfer knowledge and practical driving skills to pupils, safely, effectively and within reasonable time parameters.
Teaching others to drive includes being knowledgeable about the following:
how to teach
how people learn
how to assess the performance of others
communication
interpersonal skills
THE DSA APPROVED DRIVING INSTRUCTOR QUALIFYING PROCESS
The ADI qualifying process is in three parts:
ADI PART 1
Acomputer based Theory test (extended)
ADI PART 2
A practical test of your driving ability (advanced)
ADI PART 3
A practical test of your ability to instruct
PLEASE NOTE:You must take and pass all three parts of the examination in numerical order and you must complete the whole examination process within two years of passing the Part 1 Theory test.
* You can take Part 1as many times as you wish until you pass.
* You are only allowed a maximum of three attempts at Part 2 and Part 3 within each two year qualification period.
* If you fail on your 3rd attempt atPart 2, you must wait until two years has passed since you last passed your Part 1.
When that two year period has passed, you can then restart the full qualifying process starting once again with Part 1.
* If you fail on your 3rd attempt atPart 3, you must wait until two years has passed since you last passed your Part 1.
When that two year period has passed, you can then restart the full qualifying process starting once again with Part 1.
The average pass rates for each part of the ADI qualifying examinations are:
PART 1 = 49%
PART 2 = 45%
PART 3 = 28%
The pass rate at PART 3 is very low due to the high level of competence required to be successful.
PLEASE NOTE: A part-qualified Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) trainee will display a PINK triangular Driving Standards Agency badge in their windscreen and may have only received as little as four months supervised training. They have not taken, or, they have not passed the DSA PART 3 examination testing their instructional ability. Subsequently, PDIs hold no formal driver teaching qualification.
